Teen Empowerment hosts holiday extravaganza Dec. 18
The following was submitted by Teen Empowerment:
On Saturday, December 18, 2010, Teen Empowerment will hold a holiday extravaganza from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the Youth Program, 165 Broadway in Somerville. The goal of the event is to bring together people from all across The City of Somerville to enjoy an afternoon of cookie baking, ginger bread house making and other fun community building activities.
Youth Organizers will be presenting original songs, raps, poems and speeches reflecting some positive but trying times this past year in Somerville. In addition, there will be an open microphone portion of the event where people can perform their own work, respond to what was already presented or talk about a hope they have for Somerville in 2011. There will also be a candle lighting ceremony as a symbolic gesture of recognizing the hurt we have faced as a community but to also give faith, hope and to think about how to create more healing in the New Year to come.
As a gift, we will be raffling off gift certificates to the mall and local businesses in the area to aid in peoples holiday shopping for friends and family. Mayor Curtatone and other city official are expected to attend.
The event, which includes interactive activities and refreshments in addition to performances, is free and open to the public.
Founded in 1992, The Center for Teen Empowerment, Inc. (TE) empowers youth and adults as agents of positive individual, institutional, and social change. Each year, TE youth conduct over 150 initiatives involving some 6,000 youth and adults. For more information, visit www.teenempowerment.org.
