Nearly a foot of snow fell Wednesday night, canceling school in Somerville Thursday, according to the city.

The City of Somerville declared a snow emergency starting at 3 p.m.Wednesday.

In the announcement, the city reminded residents that property owners are responsible to shovel their sidewalks and walkways.

The city also reasserted the oft-flaunted prohibition of a traditional exercise in New England territoriality: "Residents may not use furniture, trash barrels, cones, or any other item to save parking spots on public streets," the city said. "These items will be treated as trash, and disposed of by City crews."
