Tom Champion, a longtime supporter of Mayor Joe Curtatone and former public face for the administration, will return as director of communications for the city, he said.
In a phone interview, Champion confirmed he will be back on the job Nov. 1. The return follows a yearlong stint at now shuttered Blue Water Corp., formerly based in Needham, which performed green repair and replacement of utility pipes.
"This essentially all happened in the last few days," Champion said in a phone interview. "Joe approached me and said that [Michael Meehan] was leaving, and if I'd be willing to come back."
Calls to Meehan and to the city were not immediately returned today.
Champion, 57, who has lived on Prospect Hill for 12 years, first worked for Curtatone as a campaign volunteer before the mayor's election in 2003. He last worked for the City of Somerville from 2005 to early 2010.
"I feel like I have a very big stake in the community. I've made a lot of friends here, inside and outside of City Hall," Champion said. "I'm looking forward to getting back in the harness."
