Police charged a 26-year-old Somerville man with four bank robberies committed in the city since Nov. 19, after he was seen fleeing from the scene of a robbery in Davis Square yesterday.

Daniel Merrill was observed by a surveillance team entering the Eastern Bank on Elm Street about 9:30 a.m. dressed in a hooded sweatshirt. Minutes later, officers saw Merrill leave and run toward Day Street while peeling off the sweatshirt.

Agents from the FBI's violent crimes task force, in addition to officers from Malden and the State Police who had placed the banks under surveillance, detained Merrill after a robbery alarm went out from the bank.

Merrill was not armed when he was arrested, but officers found a note demanding money, allegedly passed to a teller, and a large amount of cash, for which he was charged with one count of armed robbery.

Police also charged him with the robberies of three other Davis Square banks, at the Sovereign Bank Nov. 19; the Citizens Bank Nov. 25; and the Winter Hill Savings Bank Nov. 29.

In three of the four incidents, he allegedly claimed to have a bomb, and also was charged with three counts of making a false report of explosives.
