Cash-poor motorists may rest easier this week: The Somerville Traffic and Parking Department now takes plastic.
"The addition of credit cards has been a long time coming," said Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone in a statement.
“[Traffic and Parking] have worked diligently to implement this improvement with as little added cost as possible,” Curtatone said.
Residents and visitors have continually requested the service, he said. While stressing the importance of parking regulations in the dense city, Traffic and Parking director Matt Dias said the rise in popularity of credit and debit card use prompted the change.
"We know we have a lot of work to do,” Dias said in the statement. “That’s why we are constantly looking at improvements.”
Other recent upgrades include electronic parking meters installed at city lots that also accept credit and debit cards.
