Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone faced his stiffest competition Thursday in the weekly song versus song showdown on radio station WFNX.

Curtatone, who won his ninth contest, topped challenger Chris Gaines from RawArtWorks.

Up against a formidable foe -- in this case, Gaines's choice of the beloved duo Kermit and Miss Piggy with "Rainbow Connection" -- Curtatone pulled out the win with "Lazy Eye," by the Silver Sun Pickups.

This week's voting was closer than in weeks past, the radio hosts said. One Somerville voter, displaying characteristic loyalty to his mayor, put the contest in stark relief:

"I gotta say, screw the Muppets."

(Note to readers: Because of copyright conflicts, YouTube does not allow the original version of Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy singing to be embedded around the web, so please enjoy Debbie Harry stepping in for the porcine songstress.)
