The Somerville Public Schools have been awarded part of a $1 million, two-year grant to improve early childhood education for children and families in pre-kindergarten programs through third grade, the administration of Governor Deval Patrick announced.

The funding is part of a $50 million federal Race to the Top grant won by the Commonwealth last December. The money will help train teachers, align curriculum to broader standards, and improve the relationship between parents and the school systems that teach their children.

Four other agencies, from Pittsfield to Boston, will receive parts of the grant.
