A time capsule from 1950, found during demolition of the old St. Polycarp School in Somerville, will be opened next week.

The capsule was filled and buried by second and third grade students at the Mystic Avenue school 63 years ago. The 3.5-acre former location of the school and a Catholic church is now being redeveloped into a 24-unit affordable apartment complex by the Somerville Community Corporation. The capsule was discovered in the cornerstone of the school building during demolition.

Former students from the school, now in their 70s, will be on hand Monday, Feb. 25 to recall picking items for the capsule. It will be opened at 2 p.m. at 480 Mystic Ave.
