The snow was only lightly falling in Davis Square Friday morning, but McKinnon's Meat Market was in full blizzard mode.

A line wrapped through the frozen foods section at the Elm Street shop up to two cashiers, feverishly working their stations.

Somerville resident Karl Popken stopped in to picked up chicken and ingredients to make a sauce.

"Just something to get through the weekend," he said.

He'd already done the bulk of his shopping at Shaw's in Porter Square -- at 1 a.m. Much of the produce section was barren, and long lines waited at the registers, he said.

"I thought I'd beat the rush, the place was packed," he said.

Helen Macintyre was taking the storm as an opportunity to do some cooking for herself.

"Work was called off for me today, so I finally have a chance to cook," she said.
