Fifteen Somerville residents will be selected to participate in a new urban agriculture training program, according to an announcement from the city.

The participants in the program, called the Urban Agriculture Ambassador Program, will take training programs on garden installation, planting, and winter growing over the course of four consecutive Saturdays, starting March 16.

After finishing the program, participants will volunteer 30 hours over the remainder of year to develop gardens in the city.

"In the interest of encouraging healthy practices across the city, we need leaders to help facilitate urban agriculture activities both for civic engagement and nutrition education," Somerville Mayor Joseph Curtatone said in a statement.

Those interested in applying should contact Adrianne Schaefer at ASchaefer@somervillema.gov to request an application. Applications are due Feb. 15.
