Annually in the United States and Canada, over 500,000 people receive medical treatment for burn injuries.

Homes are the sites of thousands of burn injuries to children every year, including scalds and fire-related injuries.  Burns can cause swelling, blistering, scarring and, in serious cases, shock and even death.  Yet, many of these incidents can be easily prevented by following and implementing some basic safety tips.

burn.jpgLeanis Almanzar of Somerville (left) and his family were flown from the Dominican Republic and treated at Shriners Hospital for Children when he was 5 years old after a power generator exploded, causing third degree burns on 80 percent of his body.  Now 27 years old and fully recovered, Leanis is a member of New England's music group DCFAM. The group will be performing on Wednesday, Feb. 6 at Berklee College of Music's Heavy Rotation Records Epic Event.

“Education helps to prevent burns. When parents and caregivers are aware of household risks, injuries are less frequent,” said Dr. Robert Sheridan, assistant chief of staff and chief of burn surgery at Shriners-Boston.

In conjunction with Burn Awareness Week (Feb. 3–9), Shriners Hospitals for Children focuses on teaching children safety tips that will help keep them safe from burn injuries, especially at home.

Tickets for the show are $8 in advance, $12 day of show, all ages, and starts at 8:15 p.m. at the Berklee Performance Center, 136 Massachusetts Ave., Boston. Call 617-747-2261 or visit berkleebpc.com for more information. It is also available to watch online at Concert Window.
