Plans to appoint a local newspaper publisher to a Somerville municipal board are off.

Donald Norton, the publisher of the Somerville News and a local real estate agent, had been chosen by Mayor Joseph Curtatone for a position on the city's Zoning Board of Appeals.

The appointment required the approval of the Board of Aldermen, who were set to consider it during a meeting Thursday night.

But the proposed appointment was placed on file, effectively killing it, by Aldermen Bruce Desmond.

Desmond said that Norton had turned down the job.

Neither Norton nor Curtatone were present for Thursday's meeting.

The Somerville News, a free weekly newspaper, has been owned by Norton since 2002.
