Construction to replace the Cross Street bridge will begin March 21 and close part of the street to traffic until November, according to an announcement from the Department of Transportation.

The bridge will be closed starting 7 a.m. on March 21; westbound traffic will be detoured onto Tufts Street to Washington Street then McGrath Highway North, rejoining Cross Street on the west side of the bridge. Eastbound traffic will be sent to McGrath Highway (Route 28) North then right on Pearl Street, rejoining Cross Street on the east side of the bridge, the announcement said.

A temporary pedestrian bridge will be installed on March 14, allowing foot traffic to continue on Cross Street throughout the project. Demolition of the bridge will take place March 23 and 24, and continue "24 hours per day until completed," the announcement said.

A public hearing on the project is slated for March 19 at 6 p.m. at the Capuano School on Glen Street.
