An informational meeting on a proposal to transport ethanol by rail through Somerville and other communities north of Boston will be held on Monday.
Monday's meeting will provide background and safety information on ethanol transport by train through Boston, Cambridge, Chelsea, Everett, Somerville and Revere, according to an announcement from the city of Somerville.
Ethanol is highly flammable and can mix with water, making it difficult to cleanup after a spill. Between 2008 and 2012 a total of 31 train derailments involving ethanol transport occurred in the US.
Monday's meeting will be held at the Argenziano School, 290 Washington St. in Somerville.
