AlliancExchange turns ten! Founded in Somerville in 2003, this nonprofit is dedicated to the cause of saving the rainforests through the education of their future custodians-the children in Ecuador and Peru. Kicking-off the yearlong festivities is the annual event 'A Taste of Peru' on September 18th, 2013 at the popular Peruvian restaurant Machu Picchu in Somerville.
The event celebrates the 'Give back-buy a backpack' program which began in 2010 with a goal of funding school supplies for 10 students in Tacna, Peru. The costs of these often prove to be too much for the impoverished families in the region and as a result the children are usually made to work rather than study. The project aims to provide children with a backpack containing basic stationery, recreation and hygiene supplies for an entire school year. With a generous contribution from Nazca Line Apparel in 2012, the number of students supported three years after the program's inception leapfrogged to 60 children for the 2013 school year. AlliancExchange targets to maintain or increase funding for the 2014 school year.
Nazca Line Apparel will partner with AlliancExchange once again in giving back to their home country of Peru. Launched in July 2012 this Westborough based start-up sells apparel and accessories inspired by their namesake-the mysterious Nazca lines of Peru.
With long time supporters of the cause attending, a sumptuous three course dinner, Nazca Line T-shirts, Kallari Chocolate and Runa Tea for sale, it promises to be fun-filled evening, all for a wonderful purpose.
