A costume parade and 100-pound pumpkins carved by chainsaws will be featured as part of the City of Somerville’s final SomerStreets event this year.
The celebration will be held on Somerville Avenue on Sunday, Oct. 20 from noon to 4 p.m. and is being called the “Monster Mashed-Up @ SomerStreets.” The SomerStreets events close busy streets to vehicles and open them up to cycling, walking dancing, running and other activity and are held by the city and community partners to promote physical activity, fresh foods and reconnecting with neighborhoods and businesses.
After a costume parade that starts at Bow Street at 12:30 p.m., there will be a children’s costume contest at Conway Park at 2 p.m. and an adult costume contest at the Bow Street stage at 3 p.m. Pooches also won’t be left out of the fun. A dog costume contest will be held at the RiverDog Daycare and Pet Supplies store on Somerville Avenue in Union Square from noon to 2 p.m.
Local restaurants including Machu Picchu, Sally O’Brien’s and Bull McCabe’s will host an Octoberfest, and there will be a rock climbing wall, hay rides, and autumn craft fair and live music.
