The Massachusetts Public Health Association this week named Rebekah Gewirtz as its new executive director.
An alderman in Somerville, Gewirtz is currently director of government relations and political action at the National Association of Social Workers, Massachusetts chapter.
She starts her new job on Jan. 2, 2014.
According to the association, Gewirtz has been a leading proponent and co-sponsor of Somerville's Urban Agriculture ordinance and on Beacon Hill has pushed for protections for social workers against violence in the workplace, closure of corporate tax loopholes and a minimum wage increase.
Gewirtz is a graduate of the UMass McCormack Institute of Policy Studies where she earned a master’s degree in public affairs.
