MBTA’s Silver Line sees increase in ridership
The MBTA’s Silver Line saw a jump in ridership this year between January and August.
According to the MBTA, annual year-to-date ridership on the Silver Line’s waterfront routes is up 7 percent.
The MBTA also saw a huge jump in Saturday ridership on the line with ridership up 67.3 percent from 5,550 in 2010 to 9,285 in 2011.
MBTA General Manager Jonathan Davis attributed the jump in ridership, especially Saturday ridership, to the increase in development along the waterfront area of South Boston.
“It’s amazing to see the increase on Saturday ridership. It shows the opportunity that particular area has,” he said.
The MBTA currently has no plans to expand service on either the SL1 or SL2 bus rouites, but Davis said they are always reviewing lines to see where they can provide more resources.
“We will watch it closely and see what we will be able to do to provide more opportunity for ridership,” he said.
The first SL1 and SL2 stations were opened in 2004.
