Five South Boston businesses were the recent recipients of Mayor Thomas M. Menino’s Sixth Annual Green Awards.

The awards recognize local businesses, residents, and nonprofits that are doing their part to make Boston a little greener and are chosen because of their sustainable environmental practices.

“Boston is nationally recognized as a leader in sustainability not simply because of policies emanating from City Hall, but because of the commitment and innovation of businesses and residents who are working to improve environmental quality and grow our green economy,” said Menino in a statement. “Working together we are Greenovating Boston.”

In the Green Business category, the Innovation District’s Greentown Labs, Westin Boston Waterfront, and Harpoon Brewery were recognized at the South Boston ceremony.

South Boston-based P&G Gillette and Crown Uniform & Linen were also recognized for their dedication to a greener Boston.

The mayor also unveiled his “Greenovate Boston” campaign, which aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Boston 25 percent by 2020. The campaign strives to connect residents and businesses with sustainable practices to help reduce their carbon emissions and lower home energy costs. More information about the campaign can be found on its website.
