It’s been years of sweltering runs and punishing summer days. But on Thursday, the L Street Running Club will hold its Jim Kane Sugar Bowl 5k for the 25th year.
The annual summer run started as a way for the club to bring in neighborhood runners and put on a race for runners by runners.
“Who better than runners to put on a road race?” said John “Mac” McDermott, president of the L Street Running Club. “A good race is run by good volunteers, and the whole club will be out there.”
Originally named the Sugar Bowl 5k, in 1998 the name was changed to honor L Street member Jim Kane, who died of a brain tumor.
Organizers have also altered the route and changed the distance hoping to attract more runners, especially families.
“It use to be a five-mile run, but that can be intimidating for some in the heat,” said McDermott. “We always use to say if it’s 98 degrees we’ll cancel it because it’s not hot enough.”
The new route, which will have water stations and has been described as “flat” and “fast”, will take runners on an approximately five-kilometer loop starting and ending near Carson Beach/Boston Teacher’s Union.
After the race runners will be able to enjoy the summer night while celebrating their success with a BBQ and after-party.
Spots are still open and registration costs $30 with all proceeds going to local neighborhood organizations like the South Boston Boys and Girls Club and the South Boston Collaborative.
The race will officially begin Thursday, July 19, at 6:30 p.m. and for more information about the race or how to get involved, click here.
