Tasty Burger withdraws South Boston application, plans to meet again with community

The owners of the proposed Tasty Burger at 69-71 L St. have withdrawn their application with the city’s Licensing Board and will be back in front of the community Monday night.

David DuBois, the CEO of the Franklin Group, Tasty Burger’s parent company, said the decision to slow the process down was made after a meeting with residents in late June.

“Residents had some concerns they wanted to address and were mainly concerned about the hours,” said DuBois who was reached by phone Thursday. “We just want to hear what everyone has to say and we’ll decide what to do from there.”

Tasty Burger currently has one location in Fenway and is expected to open another one in Harvard Square by the fall.

The new restaurant in South Boston, which was planned to be a "walk-up," not a sit-down, restaurant, would be located on L Street in the former home of the Boathouse. It would not serve liquor.

DuBois who said his group is excited to move to the neighborhood, said a good majority of concern from residents surrounded the restaurant’s proposed hours.

According to the original application submitted to the Licensing Board, the group requested an 8:00 a.m. opening and 1:00 a.m. closing.

The application also requested seasonal patio seating for 40 patrons and, according to DuBois, his group would like that area to stay open til 11:00 p.m.

“We’re a neighborhood restaurant and we want to make sure to hear what the people around us have to say,” said DuBois.

The meeting for residents will be held at 6:30 p.m. Monday, July 9, at the Tynan Community Center cafeteria.

The Franklin Group currently operates the Franklin Café Southie at 152 Dorchester Ave.

"Outstanding fresh ingredients are cooked to order in an incredibly fun, laid back atmosphere that has made 'Tasty' an instant classic,'' the company says on its website.

The Boston Phoenix reported that the Tasty Burger stores borrowed the name from a scene in the 1994 film "Pulp Fiction,'' in which actor Samuel L. Jackson took the burger from a young man and says "That is a tasty burger."
