A plan to build New condominium units at 616 East Fourth St. has been approved by Boston Redevelopment Authority Board.

The 10,474-square-foot project will convert the former home of the Gate of Heaven Gymnasium into a 24-unit condominium building with three affordable units.

The $6 million project, being developed by the Cronin Group, includes an underground parking garage for 15 vehicles. There will also be parking for six vehicles at the adjacent rectory building.

The masonry exterior of the building will mostly be preserved and dormers will be constructed along both sides of the building, according to a Project Notification Form submitted to the BRA.

The side-yard will also be replanted with Cheery Trees and Maple leaf Viburnum; seasonal planting beds will also be constructed.

The project must also appear before the city’s Zoning Board of Appeals for a number of variances, including insufficient rear and front yard space, excessive height, and insufficient usable open space, before it can move forward.

The hearing has been set for Oct. 23 at 9:30 a.m.
