A two-alarm fire has pushed back the opening of the much-anticipated West Broadway grocery store Foodies, according to a representative for the company.

The store, which was built on the former site of the American Nut & Chocolate Company, was originally slated to open the week after Thanksgiving, but that has been pushed back to mid-December.

“We are definitely delayed, there is no doubt about that,” said Elizabeth Cornaro, director of marketing for Foodies. “We have to see how the cleanup goes, but we’re realy going to try hard to push it and open mid-December.”

On Tuesday, a fire that is believed to have started in the 8,500 square-foot store’s basement, caused an estimated $100,000 in damage to the building, the Boston Globe reported.

The store’s receiving area, roof, and basement were damaged during the fire, but the cost will be covered by the store’s insurance company, said Cornaro.

Staff and crews are working to get the store up and running to make the mid-December opening, but if the store can’t be opened by Dec. 15 the opening will be delayed till early January, said Cornaro.

“We’re really trying hard to get the store open, I know it’s been frustrating for a lot of people, but it could have been worse,” added Cornaro.

No injuries were reported, even though a large number of employees were on site, according to the Boston Globe.

Foodies also has locations in Boston’s South End and Duxbury.
