The ball fields at M Street Park, notorious for drainage problems, are currently under construction to alleviate flooding.

The work being done at the fields, which began in August, will renovate the area, improving turf and drainage conditions as well as adding improvements to the park’s fencing and baseball backdrops.

Although the work on the field is a welcome improvement, unfortunately construction isn’t slated to be completed till mid-summer 2013, according to the Boston Parks and Recreation Department.

The $339,000 project, part of Mayor Thomas M. Menino’s Capital Budget, is being done by the Marini Corporation.

Currently the contractor is removing all the topsoil and grading the fields to make sure park users have level playing surfaces. The park’s existing drainage pipes are also being cleaned and additional drainage pipes are being installed.

New chain link fence is also being installed and the retaining wall near the M Street backdrop is being repaired as well.

Once the field has been graded and the new drainage pipes installed, new natural turf will be planted and minor cosmetic improvements, including the repainting of metal posts and fencing, will be completed.
