The South Boston “Fighting Irish” Cheerleaders will be representing the neighborhood this coming December at the Pop Warner National Cheer and Dance Championships in Orlando, FL.

The yearly event pits the country’s best cheerleaders head-to-head for a day of dance, cheering, and complex routines.

“The girls are really excited about it. It's all they talk, text, and tweet about. It's amazing to be there with them every step of the way for this once in a lifetime opportunity,” said Colleen Moran, one of the team’s coaches.

The girls, ages 12 -14, have been cheering together since August with many hailing from South Boston as well as Dorchester and the North End.

“South Boston has always been known to breed exceptional athletes who play everything including baseball, football, and our pride and joy- hockey,” said Moran. “This is just another sport we can add to our list.”

The team of 12 has been practicing non-stop since they took first at the Regional Championships in Springfield, making sure their routines are tight and their coordination is perfect.

Although this is an exciting moment for the girls, it is also a first for the program that has been around since the mid-90s, pumping up South Boston crowds.

“It is such a huge deal to me, the girls who have been involved for years, the program, and the entire neighborhood of South Boston. Kind words and generous donations have been flowing in. The support has been truly touching,” said Moran, who was once a member of the team.

The girls still have a week or so to prepare for the nationals where they will face teams from across the country, but Moran said her girls are working hard and ready for anything.

“I think we still have some more work to do, but they are proud to be going and I am proud to take them,” said Moran. “Hopefully we bring home another National Title to South Boston.”

The team is currently raising funds to send the girls to the National Championships in Orlando.

Donations can be sent to South Boston Pop Warner, PO Box 51134, Boston, MA 02205 or email cmoransbpw@gmail.com for more information.
