Swimmers coming out of the chilly waters during January's plunge.

South Boston’s L Street Brownies and supporters of the swimming club will be jumping into the icy waters of Dorchester Bay to celebrate the New Year and raise money for an important cause.

The club, which bills itself as the oldest polar bear club in the United States, will take the plunge Tuesday, Jan. 1, to support the South Boston Sports Hall of Fame Scholarship Fund.

Registration opens at 8:30 a.m. at the Curley Community Center located at 1163 Columbia Road. Then the 100-year tradition will continue at 10:30 a.m.

Last year, water temperatures hovered around 37 degrees.

There is no fee, but a $1 donation is encouraged.

The annual swim, which saw hundreds of participants last year, is dedicated to past and recently deceased L Street Brownies.
