Foodie’s Market, the much anticipated West Broadway grocery store, quietly opened its South Boston location Thursday afternoon.

The new 8,500 square-foot store, located at 230 West Broadway in the former home of American Nut & Chocolate Company, was supposed to open the week after Thanksgiving, but because of a small fire the opening had to be pushed back.

“We’re very excited, it’s been a long time coming,” said Victor G. Leon, owner of the market, as he stocked shelves. “The neighborhood has been extremely supportive and we’re just happy to be part of it.”

Offering the standard grocery store fare, plus plenty of prepared and specialty foods, Leon thought the market compliments many of the other establishments in the area.

“We’re kind of an old style city market,” said Leon, who also has Foodie’s locations in Boston's South End and Duxbury. “We’re an easy store to shop in because of our size and we really want it to be a neighborhood store.”

Thursday’s opening, described by Leon as a “soft opening”, was informal as staff stocked shelves and set up displays.

Leon said he’d like to officially open the store with a ribbon cutting, vendor samplings, and special discounts sometime in late-January.

“Right now we’re going slow so we can troubleshoot and make sure everything is running smoothly for the grand opening,” Leon said.
