Tsega Z. Birkneh, a student at BC High, who was recently recognized for his academic achievement.

Tsega Z. Birkneh, a South Boston resident and senior at Boston College High School, was recently recognized for placing in the top five percent of students in the National Achievement Scholarship Program.

He is just one of the 3,000 students enrolled in the national program, which was established in 1964 to provide recognition for African-American high school students. Birkneh and his academic achievements will now be brought to the attention of over 1,500 four-year colleges as part of the program, according to BC High.

"We recognize Tsega for his demonstrated pursuit of excellence," Stephen Hughes, principal of BC High said in a statement. "We hold up all 22 students, who excelled in the exam, as models and reminders for all of us, as we seek the pursuit of excellence in all aspects of our lives."
