Fort Point pizzeria expected to open late-February

A new restaurant promising handmade pizzas, prepared via wood-fire oven, and a warm atmosphere will soon open in the Fort Point area.

Pastoral, slated to open at 345 Congress St. in late-February, is the creation of Chef Todd Winer and his business partner George Lewis, formerly of the Newbury street club Foundation Lounge.

This will be Winer’s first solo restaurant, but he has decades of experience in the kitchen.

Although it was the Congress Street space that first drew Winer to neighborhood, it was the community that made him stay.

“We were looking for an industrial space with big columns, brick walls, and high ceilings,” said Winer, 41. “But I fell in love with the neighborhood once we got to know everyone.”

The new restaurant will hold close to 150 seats and includes a full-service bar with 20 beers on tap as well as a café style seating area. The front cafe area of the restaurant will open up to the street with a garage door and massive windows, adding a European street café flair to the space.

A full dinner menu will be offered, in addition to options for take-out orders and eventually deliveries.

“We want to bring back that old Boston feel in a restaurant,” said Winer. “We want to create something that is comfortable, simple, and delicious.”

Winer isn’t new to delicious, he’s certified by the American Delegation of the Associazione Vera Pizza Napoletana, a group dedicated to maintaining the integrity of Neapolitan pizza and food.

“We don’t want the food to be over thought or over processed,” said Winer. “We will be dealing with simple ingredients and everything will be handmade.”

Whether it’s the open kitchen or the communal dining tables salvaged from a New England barn, everything about Pastoral is expected to be unique, including the 8,000-pound wood fire oven shipped over from Italy.

At 900 degrees, the oven can cook a pizza in just 90 seconds.

“The wood fire oven will really be the center of the restaurant,” Winer explained. “Every dish will have an ingredient that came from the oven.”

With offerings for the lunch crowd, as well as a reasonably priced dinner menu (pizzas are expected to range from $12 to $18), Winer said he hopes to create a space that will be inviting and can appeal to the diverse community that surrounds the space.

Winer also didn’t forget the neighborhood’s artists when he drew up plans for the restaurant. Every three-months the walls of the eatery will feature a local artist, with the work curated by Made in Fort Point.

“We hope we can make this space a living, breathing gallery,” Winer added.
