The South End’s Castle Square Tenants Organization and Winn Development were among the 11 businesses and residents recognized last week during Mayor Thomas M. Menino’s Sixth Annual Green Awards.

The awards recognize local businesses, residents, and nonprofits for making Boston a little greener and for efforts to boost sustainable environmental practices.

“Boston is nationally recognized as a leader in sustainability not simply because of policies emanating from City Hall, but because of the commitment and innovation of businesses and residents who are working to improve environmental quality and grow our green economy,” Menino said in a statement. “Working together we are ‘Greenovating Boston.' ”

The tenant organization received the Sustainability/Climate Action Leadership award for its work to reduce energy use at its 500-unit building on Tremont Street. The association retrofitted its building with help from Winn Development and was able to reduce its energy consumption by 72 percent, the city said.

As part of Menino's “Greenovate Boston” campaign, the city aims to curb greenhouse gas emissions in Boston 25 percent by 2020. More information about the campaign can be found on its website.
