The $200 million “Ink Block” project in the South End was recently approved by the Boston Redevelopment Authority’s Board.
The 548,900-square-foot project proposed by National Development is slated to bring 471 housing units including 62 affordable units to the former headquarters of the Boston Herald newspaper.
The development of the 6.2 acre site, which includes the construction of three new buildings and the reuse of the former Herald building, will create 85,000-square-feet of retail space for a possible grocery store, retail, and restaurant use.
The plan for the site also includes 234 underground parking spaces, 110 surface spaces, and 67 street-level spaces for short-term parking.
The plan has also set aside space for Zipcar use as well as a Hubway station.
Developed in two phases, the project is expected to be completed by 2016.
The BRA estimated the project will create 250-450 construction jobs and 68 permanent jobs.

Harrison Avenue Condos
A condominium project proposed by The Holland Companies was also recently approved by the BRA Board.
The new project located at 477-481 Harrison Ave. will create 18 condominium units and 20 underground parking spaces.
The development will rehab the existing five-story building creating two ground-floor retail/office spaces, along with eight one-bedroom units, six three-bedroom units, and four four-bedroom units.
An additional floor will also be added to the building to house two penthouse units and a “green” roof.
Two units will be affordable and the BRA estimates the $12.8 million, 45,860-square-foot project will create 15 construction jobs.
