Two Blackstone Elementary School students joined nearly 300 fellow Boston Public School students to celebrate the Berklee City Music Faculty Outreach Program with a concert showcasing their musical talents.

Rachel Mendez, a fourth-grader at the South End school, and fifth-grader Carla Savinon participated in the public concert at the Berklee Performance Center last month.

The two played flute and were joined onstage by their Berklee City Music Faculty Instructor, Curtis Warren. A total of 277 students from 13 Boston Public Schools performed at the concert.

The outreach program works to improve music education by matching school’s music educator with a Berklee teaching artist to train students with little music experience in the fundamentals.

The program also includes teacher development and principal mentoring and currently reaches 847 local students.
