Waltham men plead guilty in bank robberies

Two Waltham men pleaded guilty Friday in federal court in Boston for their involvement in a series of bank robberies in Boston and the western and southern suburbs over the last two years.
Christopher A. Politis, 37, was convicted in connection with 12 bank robberies and two other attempted bank robberies in Natick, Arlington, Boston, Belmont, Quncy, Newton, and Watertown. The other man, Donald J. Gillis, 40, was convicted on a single count of bank robbery.
Prosecutors said the robberies took place between Dec. 2007 and May 2008. Politis allegedly made off with more than $48,000 in his crime spree. He even robbed some banks more than once, authorities said.
An anonymous tipster identified Politis as the perpetrator of one of the robberies, and the FBI attached a GPS tracking device to his car, which linked him and Gillis when they reportedly robbed the Village Bank in Newton on May 10, 2008. They were arrested fleeing from the Village Bank, the US attorneys office said in a press release.
Each man faces up to 20 years in federal prison for each charge.
