Senator Fargo honored in Mass. General Hospital’s “the one hundred”
State Senator Susan Fargo will be honored for her work on lung cancer legislation at the Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center’s second annual “the one hundred” ceremony this Wednesday, according to the hospital’s web site.
As chair of the Joint Committee on Public Health, Fargo sponsored legislation creating the Commonwealth Lung Cancer Early Detection and Treatment Research Fund, which supports research for the early detection and treatment of lung cancer. Legislators recently appropriated $225,000 from the cigarette excise tax to support the fund, and the bill will be reviewed by the Revenue Committee in the coming months, Fargo said.
“I’m thrilled by this honor,” Fargo said. “You work hard to get legislation passed and you never know what s going to happen afterwards. But this has turned out well.”
Fargo is one of 100 individuals and groups being recognized for their work “on the battleground against cancer,” the hospital’s web site says.
This year’s featured keynote speaker is Elizabeth Edwards, who is fighting breast cancer and is the author of, “Resilience: Reflections on the Burdens and Gifts of Facing Life's Adversities.”
The event will be chaired by actor Chris Cooper and his wife Marianne Leone, along with PGA Tour Vice President Jay Monahan. Boston Bruins Defenseman Aaron Ward and Boston Mayor Thomas Menino will also be honored at the event, which will be held at the Westin Copley Hotel.
