20-month old girl struck in Waltham by SUV driven by her mother

Posted July 16, 2009 08:45 PM

A 20-month-old girl was listed in critical condition Thursday night after she was struck by a SUV driven by her mother, Waltham police said.

Rachel Lafauci was backing her Ford Expedition out of the garage at her home on Forest Street at around 4:15 p.m. when she ran over her daughter, Sophia, police said.

Lafauci told police the right front tire came to rest on the toddler, who was lying on her back. Lafauci then moved the car and called for help, police said. The toddler suffered serious injuries, but was conscious and crying when EMS arrived, according to police.

The toddler was taken to a local school and medflighted to Boston Medical Center.

  1. Best wishes - horrible and all too common. Thoughts with the family.

  1. Oh my goodness! Why was the toddler behind the car in the first place? Why wasn't anyone watching after her? This is so sad and senseless!!!

  1. Prayers for the child and mother that the toddler will be O.K. We all need to slow down and realize where the small children are when moving vehichles even just an inch. Hopefully this child will be O.K.

  1. Why was'nt the little girl in the childs seat in the car's back seat. No one should have little people on the loose while they are moving vehicles around!!!!!!

  1. Not to be callous...my heart goes out to the family....but you can see the hypocrisy between an elderly and a younger driver. How come nobody cries out to outlaw automobiles? They account for a ton of deaths each year. Instead the media has you blame groups. The elderly. Youth texting while driving. Etc. We are a State who is driven by the dribble of Channel 7 News. Like they said as the Roman Empire fell..."Keep the people entertained. Keep them entertained."

  1. Absolutely terrible. I feel as bad for the mother as I do the child. She will have to live with the consequences of this for the rest of her life.

  1. This is a sad story. When our kids were little, I bought a fresnel lens for the rear window. It's still on there and lets you see all the way down to the ground, especially important for taller SUVs and little kids. You may be able to find them for less, but I think I got mine from a web site called rearlens.com, who specialize in promoting child safety. You have to get used to it, but it eliminates that close blind spot.

  1. Wow.
    TXT'ing while driving...now this?

TXTing is dangerous but wow...driving in reverse is so much more. Please urge our senators to outlaw driving in reverse. It can cause injuries as shown here.

  1. Nationwide, there's been an alarming increase in injuries & deaths during the same period that auto designers have been adopting ever-more swoopy SUV rear window "fashions" which increase the size of the blind spot behind these vehicles. IMO, this is a reckless, cynical way to design increased passenger protection into top-heavy, rollover-prone vehicles, while avoiding the cost & weight penalties which would accompany roll cage designs which DON'T severely restrict visibility. To overcome the increased chance of backup injuries created by these "short-sighted" designs, low-cost backup cameras or proximity sensors could prevent almost all of the several thousand childhood injuries & deaths which now occur in the USA each year, just from this single cause!

  1. I have to comment since the whole story was never out. The children were left inside the house and not roaming around unsupervised. They were not in car seats because the mother was not leaving but simply moving the car forward to be able to open the back door. Unfortunately one child came out and something tragic occured. There is a reason why they are called accidents. You can't prevent accidents from happening no matter how hard you try. They just happen and people need to stop judging. I'm sure it's easy to make judgements about someone you do not know, but perhaps instead of judging, you should be thankful for what you have and worry about your own life.
