Waltham Mayor Jeannette McCarthy announced today that she will not run for re-election in 2015, citing her parents' health as her main reason for not seeking a fourth term.

"This was a personal decision about my parents," she said. "My mother is ill, and I am the surviving of their children."

McCarthy said she made the decision after winning the 2011 fall election for mayor, telling a select few about her plans.

"I'm telling people [now] for the benefit of the city," she said.

McCarthy said her decision will not affect her current job as mayor, and said she did not know if she would return to work in the private sector after she steps down in 2016.

"I still have three years left, and a lot of work to do," she said.
