The forum is part of a broad effort by the Attorney Generalís office to help public officials understand and comply with the requirements of the law, which demands certain matters be discussed in open public hearings and meetings.
The forum will be conducted by attorneys and staff from the Attorney Generalís Division of Open Government. Governing board members, municipal employees, and local residents are encouraged to attend.
Anyone planning to attend should register in advance by calling 617-963-2925 or emailing OMLTraining@state.ma.us. Attendees must provide their name, town of residence, the public board or organization they represent (if appropriate), and the forumís location.
The Waltham forum is part of a five-town regional tour of open meeting law information sessions. A forum in Ayer was held March 28, and sessions will be held in Wenham April 24; in Springfield May 9; and in Greenfield May 15.
The Attorney Generalís office assumed responsibility for enforcement of the open meeting law from the stateís district attorneys in July 2010. Since then, the office has responded to thousands of inquiries about the law's requirements; conducted or participated in 81 trainings across the state; and issues more than 200 determinations on the matter. In October 2011, the Attorney General's office also posted all open meeting law determination meeting laws online in an interactive database.
