Former Waltham police chief Thomas LaCroix has filed paperwork to receive pension benefits, according to Waltham Retirement Board officials.
LaCroix submitted his retirement benefits application after a Concord District Court jury found him guilty of twice assaulting his wife Andrea in their Maynard home on June 12 last year. He resigned from his post last Wednesday, the same day Judge J. Elizabeth Cremens sentenced him to a year and a half of probation.
LaCroix submitted the paperwork last Thursday, the day after his sentencing, said Joseph Juppé, Waltham Retirement Board director.
"It's an application in for retirement, and just like anyone else’s, it must be approved by the board," Juppé said. "I can't comment on what he's going to get, how much he's going to get, or when he will get it."
Juppé said city employees must have worked 20 years, or 10 years if they are 50 years old and up, to qualify for pension benefits.
Juppé said he could not answer if LaCroix's guilty court verdict would come into play.
"That's for the board members to decide," he said, noting that the board is independent from the Waltham city government. "We get information and we compile it and use that."
LaCroix will have a hearing before the retirement board July 24 at Waltham City Hall.
LaCroix, 50, worked for the Waltham Police Department for 26 years, and was appointed to chief in 2007.
He was convicted of two assault and battery counts last month even though his wife testified that LaCroix has never assaulted her.
LaCroix had been on paid administrative leave for over a year until the jury convicted him June 26 of two assault and battery counts. He was then taken off the city payroll but continued on unpaid leave.
According to city payroll records, LaCroix collected $182,358 in salary and other benefits last year, including a $16,814 longevity bonus he received after he was arrested.
In total, LaCroix has collected about $200,000 since he was arrested on June 14 last year and placed on administrative leave, according to payroll records.
