A Waltham man was arrested on mayhem charges this month after he allegedly bit another man's lip off, causing permanent damage to the victim's face, local police said.

Adolfo Molina Martinez, 37, of Cushing Street in Waltham, was drinking with friends at 659 Moody St. on Aug. 15, when police said he suddenly began yelling at the victim.

Martinez then allegedly walked up and bit off the upper portion of the victim's lip, and then spat it onto the floor, said Waltham Police Det. Sgt. Tim King.

"It appeared to be unprovoked," King said. "He [the victim] was hanging around, and [Martinez] allegedly came up and bit him."

The victim and his detached lip were transferred to a nearby hospital for possible reattachment, but King could not say if the operation was successful.

However, the police report noted that the victim will have permanent damage to his lip, King said.

Martinez was arrested by police on mayhem charges. To be charged with mayhem means the perpetrator intentionally tried to maim another person, King said.
