Non-English speaking locals who are hoping to learn the language can register for a free English as a Second Language, or ESL, class in Waltham through the fall.

Registration will take place Sunday, Sept. 22 at 11:30 a.m. at Hope International Church on Bruce Road. The church hosts the course every Sunday through Dec. 8, and take place 11:45 a.m. through 1 p.m. at the church. The class is free, but there is a cost of $90 for books, which is due at the time of registration.

The Sept. 22 event offers registration for students, as well as placement exams and opportunities to meet ESL teachers.

Led by experienced teachers, Hope International Church has been providing ESL classes for over 25 years, according to church officials. Students learn vocabulary, grammar, and idioms and have opportunities to practice conversation and participate in a variety of cultural events. Hope holds ESL classes throughout the school year.

The next session will begin February 2, officials said.

The church is one block from Rte. 20, across from Gore Place, on the Watertown line, and is accessible by the Rte. 70 MBTA bus line.

To reserve a seat in advance or find out more about ESL classes, students can fill out a registration form on the church's website, or call 781-891-5238.
