Waltham authorities are investigating a fire in the bathroom of Waltham High School that prompted the whole school to evacuate this afternoon.

Waltham Fire Chief Paul Ciccone said that a fire in a bathroom trash can caused the school's fire alarm to sound at around 1:40 p.m., effectively evacuating the whole building.

Ciccone said firefighters were able to put out the fire on arrival. Officials were still investigating what caused the small blaze, he said.

"It was a small trash barrel fire that was contained - it did not spread at all," he said.

There were no reported injuries, Ciccone said.

Since the fire happened at the end of the school day, students were allowed to go inside the building to get their belongings before being dismissed for the day, police said.

Kristin Tracey, the school resource police officer for Waltham High School, tweeted about the fire from her official account just after 2 p.m., saying that the fire had been extinguished by Waltham firefighters and that an investigation will follow.

Employees in the superintendent's office said they were not aware of a fire at the school.
