A sewer line break on Bedford Street is undermining the road's surface, causing authorities to block the road off during one of the busiest travel times of the day.

Problems with utility lines in Waltham and Lexington could snarl rush hour traffic tonight, according to officials.

The two reports are not related, officials said.

Waltham authorities have evacuated several buildings downtown after they received a report of gas line issues near 7 Church St. this afternoon, according to fire officials.

Meanwhile, a break in a Lexington pressurized sewer line near 440 Bedford St., located one-eighth of a mile from Interstate 95's exit 32, has undermined the road there, police said. The break will keep all four lanes of the thoroughfare closed until at least midnight, said Lexington Police Capt. Joe O'Leary.

"I would anticipate traffic would be crazy up there at this time," O'Leary said. "This is the primary access road to Hanscom [Air Force base], so that alone generates tremendous traffic on a day to day basis."

O'Leary said he was not sure what caused the break.

In Waltham, a call came in this afternoon for issues with a gas service line in an area where work was being done on water pipes, said Waltham Fire Lt. Scott Perry.

"As a precaution, buildings immediately in the vicinity were evacuated, but the investigation is ongoing so they might expand the perimeter," Perry said.

He could not say specifically what the issue was, or how it happened, citing an ongoing investigation.

No injuries have been reported.
