Senate election to fill Tolman's seat slated for Jan. 10

Secretary of State William F. Galvin today designated Jan. 10 as the date of a special election to fill the state senate seat left empty by the resignation of Sen. Steven Tolman, a Brighton Democrat, who left to become president of the Massachusetts AFL-CIO.

Tolman represented the the Second Suffolk and Middlesex Senate District, which includes Watertown, Belmont and parts of Cambridge, Allston-Brighton, the Fenway and the Back Bay.

Nominations require a minimum of 300 certified signatures. The deadline for submitting nomination papers to local registrars of voters or election commissioners is Nov. 1, with the deadline for filing nomination papers with the secretary of state on Nov. 8.

The party primary election for the district will be held on Dec. 13.

Nomination papers will be available in the State House in the Elections Division, Room 1705, and at all City and Town Halls in the district. For further information, call the Elections Division at 1-800-462-VOTE.
