Left to right: contestants Yugo Yoshida (12 months), Theodoros Stathis (one year) both of Millis, Luke Carceo (eight months of Arlington) and Jezabella Cavallaro (11 months of Waltham) gear up for the fourth race of the day at the Arsenal Mall Diaper Derby.

As fans around the country revved up for the NASCAR Daytona 500, area residents were crossing finish lines for races of their own.

With racing lanes consisting of mats colored blue, green, red and yellow, local babies crawled for prizes in the first Simon Mall Diaper Derby at the Watertown Arsenal Mall.

Sylvania Edouard, an 11-month-old from Waltham, took the top prize trophy by finishing in first place.

Following closely behind her was Valentina Totino, a nine-month-old from Watertown, who finished second.

Each winner received a $50 Stride Rite Gift card and $50 U.S. Savings Bond from Bank of America.

There were 24 crawlers at the mall, with four "racers" per heat. The winner from each of the six heats then competed for the first, second and third prize.

The event was regionally sponsored by Women, Infants and Children Nutrition Program, Stonyfield, and Bay State Parent magazine.
