Two Watertown High seniors awarded scholarships by local bank

The Cambridge Savings Charitable Foundation has awarded scholarships to two Watertown High School seniors through the 2012 Kevin J. Fitzgerald Scholarship Program, which awarded a total of $65,000 to graduating seniors in Eastern Massachusetts this year.

This year’s scholarship winners from Watertown High School are Jake Hellman and Tessa Lynch-Colameta.

Hellman will major in physics at Tufts University, and Lynch-Colameta plans to study chemistry at Boston University in the fall.

The Cambridge Savings Charitable Foundation was founded by Cambridge Savings Bank as its primary charitable contribution vehicle.

Cambridge Savings Bank is dedicated to supporting local education by helping to provide students with the resources they need to continue their education after high school, said Robert M. Wilson, president and CEO of Cambridge Savings Bank, in a statement.

“The Cambridge Savings Charitable Foundation is proud to have provided more than three-quarters of a million dollars in scholarships, over the past two decades, to students from the communities we serve," Wilson said.

Now in its 21st year, the scholarship program has awarded more than $815,000 to graduating seniors in the communities Cambridge Savings Bank serves.

The program typically awards two $2,500 scholarships to local graduating seniors in each community: one for a traditional four-year program, and a second for a two-year technical/vocational or community college program.

The foundation's objective is to provide grants to local non-profit organizations for the benefit of people who live or work in Cambridge Savings Bank's Community Reinvestment Act communities - Acton, Arlington, Bedford, Belmont, Brookline, Burlington, Cambridge, Concord, Lexington, Lincoln, Medford, Newton, Somerville, Waltham, Watertown, Winchester and Woburn.

Kevin J. Fitzgerald, former chairman of the board for Cambridge Savings Bank, began working at the bank while in college through a cooperative education program and started his full-time banking career upon graduating in 1967. During his career, Fitzgerald served as the bank’s president, COO and CEO.
