Hurricane Sandy leaves more than 400 NStar customers in Watertown without power

More than 400 NStar customers in Watertown had lost power as of 5 p.m. Monday, according to utility power outage maps.

That number makes up about 2 percent of NStar's customer base there, as the company serves over 17,000 Watertown customers.

Watetown had cancelled all public schools and public meetings today due to the hurricane. The town closed its Town Hall offices, the library, and the senior center at 2 p.m.

More than 170,000 electric customers were without power this afternoon in Massachusetts. As of 4 p.m., about 82,000 National Grid customers had lost power, along with about 84,000 NStar customers, in addition to others.

“We have close to a thousand crews working on storm restoration,” Caroline Pretyman, NStar spokeswoman, said in an e-mail.

So far there have been no reports of injuries or serious damage, Governor Deval Patrick said at a 3:30 p.m. news conference.

“All in all, I think we’re holding our own,” he said.

At the same time, Patrick cautioned that the state was only 1 1/2 hours into a period of high winds that is expected to last until 11 p.m.

“I think it’s going well, but it’s nature and it can change in a minute,” he said.
