A joint effort between local police departments and the FBI Bank Robbery Task Force has led to the arrest of two people suspected for robbing a Watertown bank on Monday, police said.

Watertown Police Lieutenant Michael Lawn said that the Citizens Bank inside Stop and Shop at 700 Pleasant St. in Watertown was robbed just after 10 a.m. Monday when a man approached the teller, handing her a note demanding money.

Police did not say how much cash the man took, but there was a dye pack inside the stack, Lawn said.

Police said a witness told investigators that the bandit climed into the trunk of a black motor vehicle driven by a female but when the dye pack exploded in the trunk the man climbed out and got into the front passenger's seat just before the car sped away on North Street toward Newton, Lawn said.

Surveillance photos of the suspect were distributed to neighboring police departments, and members of the Waltham Police Department identified the man as a Waltham resident.

Detectives then found the pair in the parking lot of the Holiday Inn Express in Brockton around 3:30 p.m., Lawn said.

Justin O'Connell, 28, and Erin Aspinwall, 29, both of Waltham, were placed under arrest for unarmed robbery. Police were able to recover most of the stolen cash, as well as the note that was passed at the bank.

The Watertown Police Department was assisted by the Waltham Police Department, Brockton Police Department, and the FBI Bank Robbery Task Force, Lawn said.
