The Watertown Planning Board voted unanimously last week to pass a one-year temporary ban on medical marijuana dispensaries setting up in town.

The Watertown Town Council will hold a public hearing on the moratorium at their meeting Tuesday, July 15. Council members must vote to pass it before the temporary ban, which would amend local zoning bylaws, can be implemented.

The moratorium would give town officials until June 30, 2014, to figure out where dispensaries should be located. Moratoriums on marijuana centers are gaining popularity in Massachusetts communities since Attorney General Martha Coakley deemed the approach lawful earlier this year.

Town Council will meet Tuesday at 7:15 p.m. at Town Hall, located at 149 Main St.
