A Watertown man who allegedly broke into several cars in the Arsenal Street Target parking lot this month was arrested last week by local police.

Authorities said they received a call Oct. 26 reporting a suspicious person who was trying the handles of car doors to find unlocked vehicles. When police arrived, they found Georges El-Helou, a 29-year-old Chapman Street resident, said Watertown Police Lt. Michael Lawn.

Target representatives allegedly showed authorities surveillance tapes of El-Helou rummaging through a car's glove compartment, Lawn said. Police also found El-Helou had with him several credit cards with different names on them, which were matched to a previous car break-in two days earlier from the same parking lot, he said.

Lawn said there had been about a half-dozen car break-ins in that parking lot in the weeks leading to El-Helou's arrest.

"We are definitely tying him to those incidents," Lawn said, noting that police also found him to have a stolen laptop, wallets and flash drives.

El-Helou was charged with breaking and entering and receiving stolen credit cards.

"The investigation is still ongoing," Lawn said.
