After airport arrest, driver apparently trolled Craigslist for witnesses
By Andrew Ryan, Globe Staff
The posting on Craigslist by a user named "Matron" appeared at 3:59 a.m. on Monday, just hours after a high-powered Wellesley portfolio manager had been released from police custody following an explosive parking altercation with a state trooper at Logan International Airport.
![]() Margaret M. Greer |
Matron described herself as "a middle aged lady driving a silver van" and explained that she had, "an altercation with a Mass State Cop outside terminal B around 8:15 pm.
"I am seeking witnesses who were there and saw the State Trooper bang on my car and try to get through my door," Matron wrote in a posting that was deleted this afternoon following this story's publication on Boston.com. "Several State Police cruisers pursued me and arrested me on the Mass Pike. Please help me, if you saw this event."
The description nearly matches the arrest Sunday night of the portfolio manager, Margaret M. Greer, who is accused of hitting a trooper with her side mirror, driving at him so he had to run backward for 15 feet, and dragging him for a short distance as she drove away. The one exception: Greer's "silver van" was a silver Mercedes Benz ML320 sport utility vehicle.
There is no definitive evidence that Greer used the alias Matron and trolled Craigslist for witnesses who saw her dispute with the trooper. Greer did not respond to a message yesterday seeking comment. Her attorney, Carol Ann Starkey, declined to discuss or confirm "anything about any discussion that occurred on the Internet."
"Mrs. Greer is taking these allegations very seriously," Starkey said. "But that doesn't mean we don't have our own side of the story. It doesn't mean that we don't strongly refute what the government's recitation of the facts has been to date. We are going to let our facts unroll in a courtroom, not in the court of public opinion."
Authorities confirmed that they are scrutinizing the Craigslist posting and the string of responses that followed.
"Prosecutors are aware of the postings and are examining them for any potential connection to our Logan Airport case," said Jake Wark, a spokesman for the Suffolk District Attorney's office.
If Greer did post the solicitation on Craigslist, she did not uncover any witnesses -- or sympathy -- in cyberspace.
"You fled the police?" wrote a user with the name "justanotherpost." "I am sorry but just by what you have written here, I would suggest you give up looking for 'witnesses' to bolster some kind of entitlement you seem to think you have, and, instead, cooperate with the police as much as possible to straighten the mess you have gotten yourself into."
A poster named "golf22" chimed in: "I'm sure the District Attorney appreciates your help in rounding up witnesses to testify against you as to the several illegal actions you took."
And Mr_Twister added: "We'll all be 'VERY' happy when the judge throws the book at you."
Matron defended herself, saying she was "blocked in by a bus on one side, and cars parked in front of me, and behind." The chase on the turnpike "was slow speed, and required five state cruisers," Matron wrote, "I was freaked out and traveling at 50."
When the posters turned nasty -- and one recognized the story from the news -- Matron sharpened her rhetoric.
"Wake up people, you are being controlled by a government who thinks they can do anything … When has it become a crime to pull up to the curb to pick up your husband at the airport? Oh, in a bus lane?" she wrote. "I am very disappointed at the antipathy I have received from this forum. I thought the craigslist community was more empathetic and dedicated to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness."
A lecture followed.
"Why did the State Police come after me?" Matron wrote. "Because it's so easy! The same reason that the IRS audits every pizza parlor owner in town, but never audits Enron Corporation. The same reason the SEC audits all those you know who are registered brokers, but never audited Bernie Madoff. Why do the police logs in your town fill up with teenagers and immigrants? Because it's easy for the cops to pick on these helpless people, and so much more difficult for them to go after the really hard criminals. I am distressed that you cannot see this. Please do not think you are holier than me, because you are not.
"When it happens to you, I hope I can be there to support you."

god i hope they throw the book at this lady, and hard. "When is it illegal to pick up your husband at the airport??" How about when you park in a lane you aren't suppossed to be parked in, that's when. When is it ok to flee when a duly sworn officer of the law tells you to yield?
what a piece of work.
And yes, there are a LOT of egotistical cops out there who use their powers in a less-than-desirable fashion....
BUT, how many of you face the possibility of staring down a gun barrel EACH AND EVERY DAY in your line of work???
I will never understand some people..... "I know I was breaking the law but it was only a SMALL law!" But then you are the first people to complain when the police aren't around to catch the muggers and rapists and murderers.... Well maybe, JUST MAYBE they would be if they didn't have to deal with all the people who don't seem to grasp the fact that A LAW IS A LAW IS A LAW!!!! Obey the small ones and allow the police to deal with the big ones!
This woman truly is dellusional. Whatever happened at Logan, she sealed her fate when she chose to flee from the State Police and they had to pursue her on the Pike as she headed to her house. She goes through her privileged life believing that the rules for the rest of us "commoners" do not apply to her.
p.s. the car should have been impounded as the weapon in the assault and she should have been given a blood alcohol test after the glass of booze was found on the floor of the vehicle.
If she were of black or hispanic, she would have more than likely been shot by the police, do you think for a minute any person of color would have made it as far as the Mass Pike, please. Look at the case of Moats in Dallas. How wrong was that?
They are the same elitist people who have destroyed this country with their greed and we are above the law attitude. Throw the book at her and no house arrest!
Some days you wonder if people in this country can get any stupider, and to my never ending surprise another fine citizen sets the bar even lower.
"The same reason that the IRS audits every pizza parlor owner in town, but never audits Enron Corporation"
Apparently Matron hasn't been following the news in the past eight years as Enron has since gone bankrupt and the CEO put in jail. And I bet if you ask every pizza parlor owner in your town you're likely to find that not a single one has been audited, as the IRS typically audits less the 0.1% of all tax returns. But overall she sounds like a reasonable lady and I'm sure she'll do just fine...
i think that pretty much since 911 there's been much tighter security at the airports.
I noticed that they don't let people park in front of airport terminals and I think it's due to a concern that someone could load up a vehicle with explosives, stop at a terminal and detonate it - reshaking our confidence in the safety of air travel.
i'm just a simple citizen and occassioanl air traveller and when officials at the airport are vigorously and vigiliantly implementing improved security measures, i just listen to them and assume they are doing what they're doing for a good reason, namely: our safety.
it's also a nice ritual to simply park in the proper space, walk into the airport, and greet ur loved one as they depart the plane and accompany them to baggage pickup, if they've checked anything. Maybe i'm just old-fashioned.
This woman may very well be guilty, and if she is, she should have the book thrown at her. I tend to think she probably IS guilty.
But since when is looking for witnesses a bad thing? Seems like the right thing to do.
wow, what arrogance. I cannot believe you people are on her case....she only parked in an ilegal lane, ran off, dragged a cop, led police on a chase and everyone is on her back.....the poooooooooor thing. God THEY better throw the book at her. However I am afraid with her money she will get off. I hope she atleast has the common decency to apologize to the poor state police officer who could have been seriously hurt. Instead she turns to craigs list to justify her incompetence, she will get off.....good old liberal Mass.....
So if she really did park in the bus zone then she broke the law, a simple law designed to keep order and prevent chaos. And what was her excuse, she was just picking up her husband? So maybe she didn't see the sign; so she's unobservant and not paying attention. And we still let her have a drivers license. Watch out for the silver Mercedes all you folks driving around out there in Boston. Or maybe she just thinks she's special, not like the rest of us. People who break the law, simple as it may be, or think they're special get no sympathy from me. Hope they charge her with assault with a deadly weapon.
I pretty much guarantee that this whole incident is covered by a security camera and 1 off 2 things will happen. The tape will disappear or the camera malfunctions if she just brushed him and he flipped out.
If she really did this the tape will be there.
There is no way this is not covered by a security camera though. Period.
I am not betting on either. I once slowed down and flashed a cop with my headlights to let him and the construction vehicles with him pass in front of me to the other side of the road. They were riding slow and were trying to cut over. He flipped out, gave me the finger and then after he got the construction equipment to the side, drove me down and tailgated me for 15 miles. He was incensed that I flashed them but I meant it just as ok I see you, you can cut over. This was a NH state trooper.
I'm sure many of you have done this same thing, picking someone up in the airport by the curb. I think the signs are pretty clear and so is the policy. Would it have been so difficult for this woman to go around the airport once or twice, or take the 5 minute drive to the cell phone lot and wait for a call from her husband saying he was ready? I think she made a very very easy situation into a very difficult one and basically caused the Trooper to have to do something. I'm not a huge fan of the State Police, but it doesn't look as though they had much of a choice here.
she looks like Marion Walsh
I say let the camera's at Logan tell the story.
Also, the past records of the woman and police officer. This type of event does not occur without some sort of history of conflict in their past.
I've seen officers with no tact at Logan.
I've seen citizens act like morons as well.
If her record is clean, I'd slap her wrist and nothing more.
Comedy gold.
Be careful anyone criticising her -- there are a lot of egotistical cops out there-- see the one in Dallas that abused the NFL player and apparently has done it before -- and don't forget these "Troopers" at Logan make upwards of $ 200 K+ per year-- then get $ 100 K+ pensions to boot -- for that we deserve some courtesy and consideration from them -- not banging on the car and yelling. Everyone makes mistakes -- and I do not know the exact circumstances -- but some cops throw gasoline on the fire instead of finding a middle course that gets the job done and treats people right. I have had some reasonable cops at Logan help me and I have some treat me like a piece of dirt.........we shouldn't automatically blame the public when the type that treat people like dirt cause a confrontation.
I am surprised that with a "slight odor of alcohol" and an alcoholic beverage in the front seat no sobriety test was given...regardless of the myriad of other charges. This bizarre behavior almost seems like a cry for help. How could you not think about the consequences of these outrageous actions...and then to lie about them. I feel very sorry for Meg, she's probably a decent person. There certainly is a double standard going on here, as most white people wouldn't have been afforded the leniency she has already...forget if she were a person of color. I can't begin to imagine how such a prominent figure in town will move on from this in her day-to-day life...or how her family will handle this humiliation. I suspect that is where her punishment will be met...at Roche Brothers, the country club, and the book club where conversations will stop as she enters the room and all eyes will be on her...I'd like to believe she won't be able to buy her way out of this with high priced lawyers and sympathetic judges, but I am not that naive.
Now, wait just a minute. How much is she offering per witness? Is it enough to get my own Benz SUV? Um... yeah, I was there. I say the whole thing.
But seriously folks, if she broke the law, she should pay the same consequences as the rest of us would. She won't, of course, and that's why we luuuuv America. Money trumps justice.
XOXO
I think everyone who has ever tried to pick-up someone at Logan has run into the State Trooper who is as rude as his uniform makes him all powerful. But we all move on circle and come back to be abused again without giving these gustapo any justification to abuse their power further.
I don't know all the facts in this story and will be very interested to hear more.
I tend to think it is she who thinks she is holier than the rest of us...who follow the rules at Logan!! The audicity...
As much as I disagree with what this woman did, and she should have the book thrown at her... For those that want to turn this into class warfare: This woman comes from a class of people called TAXPAYERS. Unlike the 50% of Americans who pay no federal tax, she pays a ton. I'd wager at least 50% of her income goes to pay tax of one sort or another. So, yes, just maybe, she thinks she should be treated a little differant..
Cops break all kinds of civil liberties and don't care unless they are dealing with the media or with another cop. Check out what happened to that kid from Needham that went to Miami on vacation and got shot for walking on the beach by an off duty cop who said he came at him with a knife? This lady just picked the wrong night to mess with this cop who was probably jealous of her Mercedes and that his detail OT was down.
Actually Ms. Nurse, a study was done in Maryland and the chance that a minority gets stopped by an officer while driving is lower than it is for whites relative to the number of drivers stopped who are found to be in violation of the law. Your claim of racism is 100% bogus and has nothing to do with the issue in this article. We have a culture of disrespect for the law. And studies have shown that SUV drivers are much more likely to be insecure, hostile and aggressive people. The staties have an angry attitude because they deal with thousands of people a day who don't think the rules apply to them. Cut them some slack.
ummmmm.... she has a point!!!! Her "lecture" happens to be true! The IRS goes for the easy targets as does the SEC... read a newspaper! connect the dots! Yes she probably elevated a small issue into a big one, but is it not conceivable that a member of the Statie Gestapo machine went a bit over the line too? Anyone who has tries to pick up a passenger at Logan knows that the police there are a bit much in trying to keep the homeland secure.
Thank God that Homeland Security Theatre saved us from an old lady!!!
Ever try to pick up someone at Logan? You get a call that they've arrived and are picking up their luggage. You arrive and don't see them. Is it going to kill the jack booted State Police to let you wait a few minutes? Of course it is! Of course it is the common courtesy that the show. Could they say, sorry, you need to move and there is a cell phone lot for parking? No...it's get out of here.
You get booted from your space and drive around the airport. When you return you notice a vehicle that was parked in the same spot just as you drove away the first time. This time you take notice and discover it has the emblem of a police union. Funny they were not asked to move.
for the record i believe the lady. cops exaggerate a lot when they feel they have been disrespected, they want to feel tough. it's why we hire them, but they do have a seriously bad habit of abusing their power.
Wow. This story and the comments thus far evidence the reality that this really is a police state. The cops pull down a king's ransom for trampling over the average person and claim it's for national security's sake, then use the media to make their case. It's hard to know who's the more costly whore.
logan gets everyone's blood boiling... but you gotta respect the gov't attempt to control order.
I think you have to be a real idiot or insanely arrogant to have a physical or verbal altercation with a state trooper and then take off. The state police are not known for their congenial personalities and if they tell you to move your car, just shut your mouth and move. I don't feel bad for this woman...her response on the craigslist post just shows how self righteous she really is. Maybe that attitude works for her in Wellesley, but it is just going to get you in a heap of trouble if you cross a state trooper.
She is very lucky that cop was as cools as he was. That vehicle is considered a weapon and she is lucky the Trooper didn't unload a whole clip into her windshield. He could have been killed. This woman thinks she's untouchable because of her "social status" send her to MCI Shirley for 1 night and see if she re thinks the way she goes about her business. She should do some time for this. But will most likely get a plea deal. Basicly buying her way out of it.
The more I read about this lady, the more I imagine it went down like a scene from The Catherine Tate Show -- you know "How very dare you." , "I find you impertinent." and quips like that. If she is in fact guilty of basically doing whatever she wants with a complete disregard for the rules, I do hope a judge has the good sense to throw the book at her and take this crazy down a few pegs.
Matron - whomever she is - still elicits zero sympathy. At a very minimum she needs to accept responsibility for her actions, which were illegal, and surrender this event: for stepping down politely is always better than being slapped in the long term.
What this woman did was dangerous, wrong, and against the law. She should be punished for her actions and should be thankful the trooper wasn't seriously injured. The troopers who patrol the airport, snotty (which I have never seen) or otherwise are carrying out direct orders which have been in place since 9/11. They are doing that to protect EVERYONE using Logan Airport.
If you were concerned about reducing crime where would you deploy highly trained and highly motivated law enforcement officers. Why of course, at Logan airport where all the murderes, sex offenders and drug dealers are picking up their elderly mothers and fathers. The perfect sting would be to lie in wait while they illegally park in a bus lane with thier motor on and without wearing thier seat belt. Go to bed and sleep tight knowing we are safe.
Anyone with a brain knows that you DO NOT mess around near an airport and especially with a vehicle at an airport. Kudos to the cop for finally getting this freak off the road and under control. The trooper has no idea what this woman's intentions might be or what is inside her vehicle. He'd have been neglectful if he just ignored this freak and then she drove into the terminal and blew herself up. If she was indeed driving a Mercedes no doubt she feels entitled to do whatever she sees fit.
Don't we as citizens of the Commonwealth and the U.S. have a constitutional right to seek witnesses? so what if she used Craigslist...is that wrong???
Airport cops are just about the worst of the bunch. They are eternally angry, unpredictably explosive, and could care less about the Constitution. I mean, how bad do you have to screw up your career to get stuck working the curbs at an airport?
I have no doubt that the cop freaked on her right from the start, but she shouldn't have tried to run.
Is she admitting she was at the airport now, or was she still driving home from work? The common thread amongst all these idiots in the news these days, No Accountability. Its everyone else's fault.
Exactly what is wrong with trying to find out if someone witnessed and incident?
Did her husband ever get home? Or, did he turn around and take the next flight out?
Did she ever pick-up her husband?
ummm: Your comment about Homeland Security protecting us from an old lady shows you could very likely become the victim of a scam. Terrorists are smart enough to send people who do not look like they would be terrorists. They've done in other countries. Bernie Madoff "looked" trustworthy. Obama "looked" like a reformer. That mortgage broker "looked" like he had a good deal.
Hopefully this article will help bring forward more witnesses willing to testify, that is if they're not actively intimdated by the Massachusetts State Police.
Having read only this article and 32 post so far I choose to have no opinion about who did what to who. The pit in my stomach hurts. I do agree with the poster who suggested we wait to see if a tape of this incident will surface. As far as the law being the law? Well, not exactly. After personally witnessed someone lie in court, under oath, and then impeached... watched while attorney's filed false papers with the courts... saw the judge ignore the law... only to have it all sent back to the same court from the appellate court to no avail.... I know I could never know the real truth to this mess. Never again will I personally pass judgment... I am way too scared of the real world.
She was looking for a witness who saw what really happened. She wants the truth to be heard. Maybe there's more to this story.
The craigslist post makes some valid points.
To clarify - my comment about the law being the law. Yes, parking in a no parking zone is a violation of the law and that is clear. Where things get messy is the moment when they get out of control. Sadly, for everyone of us, all bets are off these days.
This woman is in big trouble. No matter how it started, the way she chose to finish it was a big mistake. Assaulting someone with a deadly weapon like a motor vehicle is bad. To assault a law enforcement officer with it is even worse. The first case disrespects the law. The second disrepects a duely appointed officer of that law, entrusted with keeping order. That kind of thing is worse than a simple traffic violation. It attacks the whole justice system at once, short of the judiciary, and really tends to piss off the authorities. The craigslist stunt was delusional.
This lady sounds a little cooky, but the point about police officers is understood. Just the other day I went into the Acton Police Department to pick up a firearm registration form, commonly known as an FA-10. The officer in charge abruptly said "What's an FA-10 form?" And then a dismissive, "I don't know anything about firearm registration." Gee, thanks for the help. I find it hard to believe a police officer would not know anything about firearm registration, since you have to go to the police department to get a firearm license! The guy was a complete terd, and apparently was okay leaving me hanging out to dry on a process that the state mandates you must complete within 7 days. Thankfully, an administrative woman was able to pull the form 3 feet away from our friendly officer and slide it under the glass. I've never had any issues with the law, but it's easy to see why there's an underlying dislike of the police in parts of our society. I wanted to give the guy a piece of my mind after about 15 seconds if interaction. Wasn't even worth the hassle.
We don't know all the details here (unless you believe everything you read), which makes you--well, less than savvy. For those of you that think just getting stopped makes you guilty, you are delusional. There are cops out there on such a power trip it is scary. Their co-workers know it and say nothing, and their superiors know it too. State cops, Boston cops-they both have their nut cases. So sit back and judge, and hope you don't get assauled when one of them is on some peronal tirade.
I'm not surprised. I drive through Wellesley almost everyday and the number of incomteptent, middle-aged , women drives is staggering. They think they rule the roads and do whatever they please. Plus they drive huge cars, which makes their lack of control even more evident. I hope they suspend her license.
To Susan Nurse,,,you are a typical liberal apologist and drama queen.Matron needs to be held accountable and I have no sympathy for her but the only comparison between her and Moats is that they both feel entitled to special treatment.Moats went through a red light endangering the public and then couldn't produce evidence of insurance and flippantly told the officer to "you go look for it" delaying the officer and Moats himself who was so desperate to see his dying mom which was a lie since it was actually his mother-in-law.I don't care how close you may feel to your mother-in-law,she's not your mom and not as close to you as your mom.Just another ploy by Moats for sympathy and special treatment.typical NFL prima donna. Oh and by the way get your facts straight,,Moats and no others got shot during these incidents.Typical drama queen hysteria.
I agree with her....maybe it wasnt right, but the cops at the airport are such .....XXX.. Overpaid state troopers who have nothing better to do than harrass women who are at the airport to pick up thier loved ones. I was at the airport picking up my 92 year old grandmother and was all put pushed by one of them. My car is my property and i dont want their filthy cop hands on it. Guess the staties are starting to follow in the footsteps of our mayor. The only bigger jerk out there....Menino....
Things to do in Wellesley
